Madigan never ceased to amaze me. It was his unswerving focus on whatever task he set his mind to that made him unstoppable. I clung to his neck with one arm, and kept my telescoped cane tight to my chest with the other. Though it did nothing to actually shut out the worldâs chaos, I closed my eyes, fearing the unknown.
âI can still see you,â a deep, male voice echoed in my mind. He had a heavy French accent, and a malicious delight in his tone. The reverberations and the calm cadence told me the phantom dude wasnât fussed that we were fleeing. He either didnât want us, or already had us, and our flight was laughable to him.
A shudder ran through my body, but stranger was the growl and shudder that simultaneously ran through Mad, as well. âDid anyone else hear tha?â
âDonât answer the voice, whatever ye do!â Lugh shouted. âDonât talk back to him. Itâs the Nain Rouge. Once heâs got ye, heâll never let ye go!â
âNolan, run closer to me. I donât want nothing aiming for ye.â
âAye, brother. Iâve got your back. Ye can lead the way.â
Bastien was frantic. âHeâs in my head! Heâs saying thereâs a way to cure Rosie. I have to go to the main city in Ãireland to find the Curcuma Longum plant. Is he telling the truth? Is there a chance thereâs a cure for her blindness?â
Lugh was adamant as his boots pounded through the snow. âWeâve got Kerdik, Bastien. If a plant could heal her, we can just ask him for it. The Nain gets off on chaos. He wants to take everything good about Faîte and tear it to pieces. Anything he says, put it out of your head. And whatever ye do, donât answer him!â
âYouâre sure?â
âIâm sure. I was alive before the Nain was captured. Heâs telling me to shoot an arrow through the wolves right now, because one of themâs a spy for Dother.â
Both my wolves howled their indignation at being slandered so maliciously. âWeâve done no such thing! We gave up everything for Rosie, so she could free Ãireland from the Were curse.â
I hurried to assure them that I knew who they were. âI know, guys. I know youâre not spies. Thatâs ridiculous.â
âLinkâs not dead,â Mad chanted to himself. âLinkâs just fine. Linkâs safe and sound with his Quinn. Linkâs grand.â
âLink is alright,â I confirmed. âHeâs probably off telling ridiculous jokes and charming the pants off of Quinn right now.â The Nain Rouge seemed to be tapping into our grave fears and desires, which made him all the more dangerous. How does the Nain even know Linkâs name if heâs never met him? I tried not to freak out at the mind-reading, but breathe deeply while Mad ran with me in his arms through the snow.
âAye. Say it again,â Mad requested, and I knew the Nain Rouge was getting under his skin.
âFaster!â Lugh urged us. âRun until we canât hear him anymore. Heâs⦠Itâs all lies!â Lugh shouted, as if telling himself along with us.
